Ireland, August 01,2019- UK Conservative Party leadership candidate, Boris Johnson, in a video promoting his candidacy, declares that the UK will leave the trading bloc on October 31st, “deal or no deal”. French President, Emmanuel Macron, agreed that October 31st should be the "final" deadline for Britain's much-delayed withdrawal from the bloc stating that no further extensions should be offered.
Following recent EU parliamentary elections, sentiment towards the UK has cooled as new MEPs settle in to tackle more urgent challenges. Neither changes at the EU Commission or Number 10 are likely to re-open withdrawal negotiations.
Irish business must prepare for the worst, warned the Irish Data Protection Commission on February 8th. After the October delay to Brexit agreed at the April European Council , “It will be unlawful for EU based data controllers to transfer personal data outside the EU/EEA” without investing in “specific safeguards ”. For example it will be unlawful to transfer the personal data of workers and customers from Ireland into Northern Ireland or use a UK based cloud provider to process or store personal data.
With Brexit certainties materialising, impacted Irish businesses are advised to immediately re-evaluate their data flows to avoid transferring personal data from the EU/EEA into the United Kingdom.
