Kathmandu, 1st October-Two Czech Republic nationals, Josef Zeman (57) and Eva Rihova (55), are all set to start their 30 days (2nd October-2nd November) expedition to Mt. Pumori (7,161m), located on the Nepal-Tibet border in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, eight kilometers west of Mt. Everest.
Like Mt. Everest, Pumori, also known as ‘Everest’s Daughter’, has been attempted by many mountaineers from various nations in the past. It was first climbed on May 17, 1962 by Gerhard Lenser on a German-Swiss expedition. A new route to the top was also successfully climbed by two Czechs (Leopold Sulovsky and Zdenek Michalec) in the year 1996. By 2005, about 500 had already summitted the peak. The technically challenging routes to the top have also claimed about 42 lives up till 2005. This expedition is going to be the first expedition of the year 2015 in the Khumbu region of Nepal, post country’s most devastating earthquake.
During the expedition, these Czech nationals will be assisted by a team of Sherpas (Team leader, Assistant leader, and base camp support staff) and a government liaison officer. The team leader and the assistant leader will accompany the couple up till the summit, while the remaining team will provide the base camp support. Moreover, yaks will be used to transport required goods to the base camp instead of porters. These climbers, who have already been here in Nepal thrice before, have also successfully, climbed the Island Peak situated in the Khumbu region of Nepal. This time the couple is also planning to help the teachers and students of one of the schools located in Ghat by providing them with 56 pairs of shoes.
