Reliance Group to Set Up DAAP Defence Park in Nagpur’s Mihan

The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group, after its recent series of partnerships and associations, has further positioned itself at the core of India’s defence manufacturing by announcing a 289-acre aerospace manufacturing park to be built at the Mihan (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport ) SEZ of Nagpur.

The Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park (DDAP) will come at an accrued cost of Rs 6,500 crore and will be built by Reliance Defence, a newly formed subsidiary of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group. It will house independent assembly line units for producing fixed wing aircraft and aersotrcuctures for transport aircraft and helicopters for the defence and commercial sectors, and will be a one-stop development cycle hub that will include after-sales support.

The land for the project has already been signed off on by the Mahrashtra govt., which recently handed over a letter of allotment to Reliance Aerostructure. , “We are deeply committed to defence sector. Our first acquisition was Pipavav. Project at Mihan would be the largest greenfield project not only in India but in South East Asia. We started on June 16, 2015, with first presentation and in less than 10 weeks we got the land. This is a record", said Anil Ambani while attending a felicitation ceremony at Nagpur which also had Chief Minister Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in attendance.

Mihan was finally zeroed in on after a series of extensive surveys and analysis of potential sites in India turned out in its favour for its multiple strategic and geographical advantages. Proximity to airport and testing space for conducting air tests and superior telecommunications and social infrastructure, and with an IIM close by, Mihan has ready access to well-trained managers for the industry are some of those.

To be modelled on a smart city model, DAAP will add about 1,500 jobs in the primary sector, 3,500 jobs in the secondary sector, and nearly 5,000 jobs in the tertiary sector. Moreover, it will be a platform for global original aerospace equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to have their points of sale.

Speaking at the felicitation event, CM Fadnavis thanked Ambani for taking into consideration his suggestion of setting up a defence factory in Nagpur. The CM also hailed him as the ‘brand ambassador’ of Mihan who could map the SEZ globally.

Fadnavis also mentioned of aircraft major Boeing planning a comeback after it had previously pulled out of a Maintenance Overhaul Repair (MRO) agreement, which was taken over by Air India. In his words, he hailed the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, calling it a facilitator of growth and public-private partnerships.
