USB 3.1 Type-C is an entirely new connector that fits into its port in either direction, making a connection regardless of the plug's orientation. The new connector is also physically very small, measuring only 8.4 mm wide by 2.6 mm high. This makes it an excellent size for any device, be it a set-top box, laptop, tablet, or ultra-thin smartphone. The connector's 10,000-cycle durability is extremely robust and has been designed to handle the rigors of daily use in mobile computing.

While the New USB 3.1 Type-C is a significant step forward in the world of connectivity it remains compatible with previous iterations of USB. Older devices will still be able to connect with a newer one. Eventually, all devices will phase out current USB ports in favor of Type-C ports.
