Office building workers exposed daily to harmful chemicals

MELBOURNE, Australia -- A recent survey of some CBD office buildings to ascertain their current chemical cleaner usage, and potential savings of same if a compact, new technological solution is adopted, has thrown up some astounding numbers.

There are some impressive benefits to be had for the environment, and users also net a financial gain over the use of so called traditional chemicals. Eliminating personal exposure to harmful chemicals is a good thing too.

Not only is the green, sustainable choice better for us and our places, it's cheaper too.

In just one twenty storey office complex nearly 5,000 plastic containers of chemical were identified that can be completely replaced using a GenEon water electrolyzation unit from Ionic Systems. Eliminating those containers means 2,470 litres of chemical cleaners and concentrates neither used nor disposed of. No initial manufacturing, transportation, storage. No risk of worker injury.

Worse, those thousands of litres of cleaner are often locked into the local environment of big buildings, meaning that workers and visitors alike are exposed to them on a daily basis. Whilst no-one knows for sure right now what the long-term health effects of those chemicals are, most people are not comfortable with them when asked directly, and there is growing evidence of asthma, allergies and many disorders and diseases being linked to chemicals.

The capacity to minimise our collective exposure to harmful chemical cleaners has arrived in Australia. Even if only government tenanted or controlled buildings adopted the technology there’d be tangible benefits. Wishful thinking?

Les Miles, from Melbourne business Ionic Systems Australia states: "The science driving GenEon is irrefutable, and has been used industrially for decades. It's now available for commercial buildings of all sizes. GenEon technology eliminates harmful chemicals from our local environments, and removes huge numbers of plastic containers from our collective environment. It's a safe, healthy alternative. Our aim is to raise awareness of this genuine alternative that goes beyond green and which offers such positive outcomes."

And that is, potentially, good news for the thousands of workers tracking into hundreds of different office buildings across Australia every day.

For those of you who'd like to investigate the chemicals just a little further, why not take a look at the "10 Americans" video from the US Environmental Working Group. It's a thought provoking video detailing the pre-birth pollution of newborns: http://youtu.be/0-kc3AIM_LU
