Rude awakenings of a first-timer: When Crowdfunding attracts more solicitations than backers

As the Loremaster within Camelot Hobbies in-charge of raising funds for the freelancing supporters of our game, Dragonlord Supremacy, we heeded the advice of notable experts to launch a crowdfunding campaign to engage the community. And so we did. In fact, we launched two: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/77633384/dragonlord-blue-bastion and https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/dragonlord-supremacy-multi-platform-strategy-game

We thought the hard part was putting together the campaign mechanics, but we never expected that we spent more time discussing over the various service offering proposed through Private Messages than what to update on our site every other day! Here is our story.

It all began when our avid freelancer Porthios, was trying to put together an Arthurian game universe when he met Lady Antiva. Lady Antiva, another freelance author had been inspired by the tale of King Arthur and was reaping moderate success by selling her ebooks on-line over Amazon.com under her brand of ‘Camelot Prophecies’.

And so it was that Porthios managed to develop the strategy game ‘Dragonlord Supremacy’ based on the same story arc with two dozen freelancers. With episode 1 almost done, the idea at hand was to launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to release the game to Arthurian legend fanatics and PC strategy gamers alike. Here's the youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq6cqkJSlK4

Dragonlord Supremacy is a turn-based, story-driven and quest-driven PC strategy game that revolves on the medieval conquests in King Arthur’s era. Players take upon the role of a Dragonlord of Queen Morgana, who had to take the lands using whatever means necessary. The turn-based game has two phases—Orders Phase and Reinforcement Phase—per turn for each player.

According to Porthios, “Besides attempting quests to advance the storyline, the gameplay’s unique border management allows players to strategize campaigns that will ultimately affect their progress… Unlike many strategy war games that require players to spend an inordinate amount of time on resource gathering, in order to build and buy - this game allows you to employ strategies around border enlargement and connection! Extend your allied settlements by building bastions to stretch the perimeters of your territory, and strike fear in your opponents!”

Porthios added, “We have put in place all that is needed to create this game, and we now seek the community to help us take the game to launch. The first quests have been completed and included in the demo. The founders will complete the 1st Episode 'Blue Bastion' and seek your help to get the word out.”

The word did get out all right, except the messages that came in fast and furious were about how we might need some extra help in getting our press release out, finding an audience, and engaging backers through social media! Make no mistake; we did get some backers and a Thank-You shout out to these generous supporters! But for a first timer, this was indeed an eye-opening experience.

We are only a third into our campaign, which was to raise $5,000 from August 27 to October 6. The Game Demo is already done so the proceeds of the campaign will go to completing Episode 1: Blue Bastion and Episode 2: Green Gridlock. At the same time, Porthios and his team will be developing the game for iPads and Android tablets. Any remaining proceeds will go towards the creation of 2 more episodes with the help of backers.

Rewards for campaign backers include acknowledgement as Benefactor, Patron, Champion, Conqueror or Game Advocate at the game credits, Dragonlord Supremacy wallpapers and free demo downloads, PC version copies of the game, free digital copy of the Monsters Compendium, and the yet-unreleased copy of the Dragonlord Supremacy ebook.

Now that we have figured out how to deal with the Private Messages, it’s time to get cracking on the campaign once more. To find out more about us, visit our Facebook Fan-Page – we are giving everyone who LIKE our page the game demo too, at: http://facebook.com/DragonlordSupremacy
