NEW DELHI, India -- FakeOFF, the Israeli app to counter fake Facebook profiles helps discover interesting stats about India

Facts revealed from over 100,000 profile investigations

New Delhi, Tel Aviv, March 13th, 2014: Fake Facebook profiles are a growing menace that targets young people, professionals, and businesses and just about anyone with a Facebook profile. From stalking to identity theft to financial fraud, the risks are many. That is why when Eliran Shachar, an Israeli entrepreneur recently launched the FakeOFF app, which helped detect and expose fake Facebook profiles; people downloaded it in large numbers all over the world including India.

In the course of them carrying out investigations on behalf of their Indian app users, FakeOFF discovered some interesting facts about the menace of fake Facebook profiles impacting Indian subscribers of the popular social networking site. According to Eliran, “We carried out more than 100,000 investigations on behalf of over 55,000 users. In the process we examined 22,266,074 timeline activities, which made us obtain some interesting stats.”

Among the interesting bits was the fact that the average Indian Facebook user has 402 friends. Under the investigations, each case was assigned a score between 1-7, after accounting for suspect action. These scores were then summarized into three categories each of which was assigned a percentage. This led to the following conclusions:

1. 61% of the investigations came up with a very good result meaning that the users in question is probably who they say they are.

2. 26.3% of the investigations results were marked as “Be Alert” meaning that there is a very high probability that there is something wrong or not natural with the “friend” in question

3. 12.6% of the investigation results are marked as “Be Cautious” meaning that the friend in question can be fake or bad. In such cases, users are advised to run a photo integrity check to make sure.

FakeOFF plans to fine-tune the app further by enabling subscribers to find out the exact time when their identity is stolen in real-time. Users will, in fact, immediately receive a notification that their photograph is being misused and the exact location of the misdeed. Further, they will be guided about the appropriate actions to be taken.
