Over 100 New TLDs Added to Internet

MADISON, Wis. -- In 2012, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - held an historic application round inviting companies from around the globe to apply to create new Top Level Domains (TLDs). A TLD is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .com is the most popular TLD today.

Over 100 new TLDs resulting from that application round have now been delegated - or added - to the Internet. After a TLD is delegated, is must undergo a ramp-up phase during which the TLD operator puts in place the technical infrastructure required to support he new TLD.

The first new TLDs resulting from the 2012 application round are scheduled to begin selling domain names to the public on January 29, 2014. During the first few days of the Early Access program, domains in these new TLDs will be sold for premium prices up to several thousand dollars per domain name. During this time, it is expected that customers will buy premium domain names on a first come, first served basis. After the Early Access phase is complete, prices will drop dramatically in the General Availability phase, which will commence on February 5, 2014. During the General Availability phase, domain prices will drop to a much lower rate, around $40 per domain per year.
