Cincinnati, OH | Theatre for the Free People, an organization which uses art as a vehicle for social change, is now recruiting artists to participate in a multi-disciplinary art program at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. Theatre for the Free People, a non-profit organization which was founded in New York, NY is a project of Free People International, an international hub for the the creative revolution. "We're artists, rebels, visionaries and social entrepreneurs. We specialize in offering creative solutions to the world's biggest problems." The Artist as Activist Program is a ten week project which will take place at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center on Saturday afternoons, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM from January 11th to March 15th. This program is specifically geared towards artists of any discipline, educators, community organizers, arts + cultural workers, and social + creative entrepreneurs. It's mission is to answer the question, "how can we leverage our collective creative energy to rock this city.
The Artist as Activist Program examines the artist as environmental, ethical, humanistic and social activist. By using the concept of artists as transformative agents from social, cultural and political perspectives, this program provides venues for literary, visual and performance artists to create art, to engage in conversations about the impact of their art on society, and to raise societal awareness of the use of art as a tool for liberation. Each week, participants will be guided through a series of exercises that challenge how we understand ourselves, our environment/community and our world. We will then collaborate on community based projects and a multi-disciplinary performance event + exhibition at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center in March.
"I am really inspired by the start up community here in Cincinnati and want to be a part of the movement" explains Theatre for the Free People's Executive Director, Joi M. Sears. "I grew up in Cincinnati but moved to New York soon after graduating from Walnut Hills High School where I lived and worked for ten years. I spent the last few years living abroad in Amsterdam, Netherlands and have traveled all over the world exploring the innate ability of the arts to transform lives and mobilize communities. I love being back home in Cincinnati and recently had the opportunity to participate in Artworks' Springboard Program. I am excited to collaborate with other local artists in this innovative program".
Benefits of the program include Local Exposure: Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work at an event at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center in March and be featured in the “Cincinnati xChange” digital magazine upon completion of the course. National/International Exposure: Participants and their businesses/projects will be profiled on the Theatre for the Free People website and will have the opportunity to receive international exposure through our parent company, Free People International and short documentary film/promo video. Participants will also be invited to join Free People International creative hub which conducts programming all over the world including a current base in New York, NY and Amsterdam, Netherlands. Artist/Activist Training: Participants will receive a comprehensive Artist + Activist Toolkit to empower them to develop their own arts + social change projects outside of the course and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other local artists, artisans and entrepreneurs. They will also receive Creative/Social Entrepreneurship Coaching; Participants will receive one on one training to empower them to accomplish their goals as an artist or entrepreneur including (but not limited to) marketing, branding, project development and drafting a business plan and receive discounted rates to all Free People International services including (but not limited to) website design, brand consultations, graphic design and social media marketing coaching.
