HICKORY, N.C. -- ABOUT THE EXTRAVAGANZA

Located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina at the Hickory Metro Convention Center, the Extravaganza is one of the only woodworking shows of its kind in North Carolina. The admission is free, the parking is free, the demos and classes are all free, free locally grown apples, which were enjoyed by nearly five thousand people from over fifteen states last year, free registration for door prizes and much, much more. We will have several prizes we will be giving away with the grand prize being a $1,250 gift certificate. Read on to find out more about some of the classes and demos that will be on hand.

Last year we had nearly five thousand people in attendance and this year is looking as if we will exceed that number. We have over forty-five vendors represented from companies like Powermatic, Jet, Porter-Cable, DeWalt, SawStop, Bosch, Carter Tools and more. There will also be tours of the Klingspor Abrasives plant on Friday.

WOODCARVING DEMOS:

Tim Trudgeon will be carving caricature faces on pumpkins again this year for the Catawba Valley Woodcarvers on October 19th.

Jerry Talton, from Stella, NC will be returning this year. Jerry will be demonstrating Eastern North Carolina decoy carving techniques using hatchets, draw knifes and spoke shaves to carve antique style duck decoys

Peter Ortel will be the Catawba Valley Wood Carvers Featured Carver for 2013 and Judge. He will be presenting ongoing demonstrations Friday and Saturday for the show.
He actively started woodcarving in 1989 after taking his first woodcarving class and becoming completely hooked on his new found expression of art. He co-founded the Mid Hudson Woodcarvers Guild in 1990. He traveled all over the country in order to take caricature classes from Harold Enlow, Claude Bolton, Dave Dunham and other master caricature carvers in order to hone his skills. Peter’s carvings have won many first place awards including the prestigious Best of Show and People’s Choice awards at the International Woodcarvers Congress. His work has been featured in books, national and international woodcarving magazines, and television. He also teaches woodcarving, judges at shows and does commissions.
In 1992 Peter was inducted into the Caricature Carvers of America, and had the honor of serving as its president from 1996 to 1998. He has now earned emeritus status and continues to participate in many of the CCA functions.
After living a lifetime in New York, Peter and his wife Madelyn now reside in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina where he continues to teach woodcarving seminars, carve for his own pleasure and enjoy life.

Nick Cook is going to be back for our 2013 Klingspor's Woodworking Shop Extravaganza – if you missed him last year or still have more to learn from one of the best, add to your calendar immediately Oct 18-19, 2013.
Nationally known woodturner, Nick Cook lives in Marietta, Georgia, where he owns and operates his studio. He grew up around his father's woodworking equipment and became interested in the art of woodturning in the mid-70s after several years in furniture design and manufacture.
A founding member of the American Association of Woodturners, Nick served six years on the board of directors, including one as vice president.
In addition to creating one-of-a-kind pieces and his staple gift items, Nick teaches and lectures on various woodturning topics, has written articles for several woodworking magazines, and produced two woodturning videos. You can also find Nick selling his pieces at craft fairs in the Southeast.

Woodworking Demos
Ben Hobbs will be on hand teaching traditional woodworking methods and how to make cabriole legs.
Ben and his wife opened the Beechtree Inn in 1994 and started furniture making classes. Lately, he has selected the best from Perquimans and Chowan to reproduce. Some of his latest work can be seen at his website, hobbsfurniture.com.
Ben received the 2012 Cartouche Award given by the Society of American Period Furniture Makers(SAPFM).

NC Woodworker.net Collaborative Art Project
It started as one man's idea and blossomed into an effort that combines furniture making with collaborative art. Collaborative art is where different artists work either together or separately toward a common goal. The idea was to build a simple chest of drawers, but the drawers are where the simplicity ended and the creativity and artistry began.
The chest measures four feet by five feet with space for twenty four equal drawers. Each drawer front is designed and made by a different craftsman. The common theme is that the front of each drawer represents some aspect of the state of North Carolina. Depicting winding mountain streams, famous landmarks or sandy seashores, each drawer will be unique. As each craftsman applies his individual touch and the strength of their talent, this piece features a uniqueness seldom seen in furniture.
North Carolina Woodworker has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project bringing the craft of woodworking to veterans that have been wounded in the line of duty. Many of these veterans have lost limbs, and some are wheelchair-bound. Special stands have been built supporting the equipment at angles, allowing wheelchair access. This is not just for those physically impaired. For some, their wounds are not necessarily visible. While at times our wounded warriors may be reluctant, the program will show them that they can do something new and give them that 'Aha' moment as they realize, "Hey, look what I have created."
Come and be a part as we auction this truly one of a kind piece and help one man's dream contribute to those who cannot so easily help themselves. Join us at our auction on October 19th at the Klingspor Extravaganza in Hickory, NC. Details and times for the auction will be posted at a later date. Check back often for details. More information about NCWW can be found at http://www.ncwoodworker.net

Michael Vermouth from The Newfound Woodworks will be at 13th Annual Klingspor's Extravaganza. If you have ever thought of building your own canoe, this will be a must for you to see.
