Noah Riedel: Sleepless in Seattle

Pottery Northwest is pleased to present "Sleepless in Seattle," a solo exhibition of work by Noah Riedel. The show will run from October 4 through October 26, 2013 in the Gallery of Pottery Northwest's historic home at 226 First Avenue North (between Thomas and John), just one block south of the Key Arena at the Seattle Center. An Opening Reception with the artist will be held on Friday, October 4th, from 6 to 8 pm. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Noah Riedel spent most of his life in North Carolina. Since being introduced to clay, in college, he's gained experience working in a design gallery, managing a wholesale ceramic production studio, serving a traditional apprenticeship under Mark Hewitt, and running his own studio pottery business. In addition to winning 2nd place in the Strictly Functional Pottery National Competition, Riedel also joined with 26 other artists to create the Franklin Street Arts Collective in 2009 to promoted both local and national artists in Chapel Hill, NC. Since September of 2011, we've been fortunate to have Riedel working in Seattle at Pottery Northwest as one of our most productive artists in residence.

Riedel's work is spare and strong with an attention to design, function, and local resources. Sleepless in Seattle showcases work developed by him during his two year artist-in-residency at Pottery Northwest. According to Riedel:

"... so much of what's out there is mass produced, with market viability guiding decisions all the way - from the materials used through the manufacturing processes and on to sales. I don't have those restrictions on what I make. I can make something unique, something handmade and creative, using local materials and original ideas."

Wally Bivins, Executive Director of Pottery Northwest observes "Noah's sensibility, both in design and execution, tells us there is still a great deal of significance in the handmade, especially in the 21st century."
