With diminishing labour force and increasing menace of litter waste, poultry farms are turning to a renewable rescue – Biodegradable Waste to Energy. Poultry litter to energy comes in the form of a huge relief to the poultry community as it serves the dual purpose of regular waste disposal and energy generation for heat and power.

Hyderabad based engineering company Ahuja Engineering Services (AES), has positioned itself to enter the largely unexplored poultry waste to energy sector in India. The company has been working on creating a perfect solution for poultry farms to deal with their unaddressed waste management issues. AES aims at providing an in-farm product that would convert poultry litter into power for captive consumption.

Unlike a number of renewable energy companies, AES relentlessly follows a distributive business model. Biogas generation from litter can make poultry farms self sufficient in terms of discarding waste on a regular basis and replacing diesel and electricity board power.

“Imagine an ammonia free poultry farm, that not just converts its waste to energy, but also improves bird health, gets better egg production and saves sanitation costs that are otherwise incurred to treat accumulated waste,” says Shruti Ahuja, director-technical, AES, who, along with her team, has set-up a demonstration model in Medak, AP to showcase the successful conversion of poultry litter into methane rich biogas.

As industries are gearing up for future times when solid waste management will become a regulatory norm and energy costs will follow a growing trend, AES is not just bullish on power from waste but also on the prospects of biogas up-gradation to CNG which will prove to be a cost effective fuel for replacing unsubsidized LPG for heating applications.
