Carol M. Jantzen,PhD,has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

AIKEN, SC, June 22, 2023 - Carol M. Jantzen, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging close to five decades of excellence in geology and material sciences, Dr. Jantzen has earned distinction as an affiliate faculty member of the College of Sciences & Engineering at University of South Carolina Aiken. Since 1982, she has focused her efforts on glass chemistry, including the development of a unique process control system to remotely operate a high level nuclear waste glass plant in the area. This control system has allowed nuclear wastes to successfully and safely be turned into glass since 1994 and will continue to operate the facility for the remaining ~20 year mission.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Jantzen began her career with the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina in 1982. Over the course of her profession, she has contributed over 300 publications to the field and lends her expertise as a member of the National Academy of Science, the National Research Council, the American Society for Testing and Materials, and the Materials Research Society. She also served as the first woman president of the American Ceramic Society and is both a Fellow and Distinguished Life member of the society.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Jantzen was honored as a Distinguished Alumna by Stony Brook University (2000) and by Queens College (1998) and in 2014 when she received a Doctorate of Science Honoris Causa. She also was the recipient of the South Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Scientific Research in 2016.

Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Jantzen earned a Bachelor of Science in geology and a Master of Science in the same field, both from Queens College. Following these achievements, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in material science and engineering from Stony Brook University. Following her doctorate she was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Later, she became an Honorary Professor at the University of Aberdeen (2000-2005). Within the coming years, Dr. Jantzen intends to continue her role as an affiliate professor at the University of South Carolina Aiken where she is establishing the Fredericks Mineral Gallery to interest young children in careers in Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM).
