June 07, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the US state of Oregon has approved measures to prohibit polystyrene (PS) foam containers and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food containers.
State Bill 543 was signed into law on May 8, 2023. It will regulate:
• Single use PS foam containers for prepared food
• PS foam containers
• PS foam packaging peanuts
• PFAS in food containers
PFAS is defined in the law as a substance included in a class of fluorinated organic chemicals containing as least one fully fluorinated carbon atom.
SGS has published SafeGuardS 061.23 to help stakeholders understand the full scope and requirements of the new law. It contains a table that includes examples of products in scope, as well as exempted products.
The new law will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
