James J. Morris Jr. Recognized for Accomplishments in History and Archives

ZAMBALES, PHILIPPINES, May 24, 2023 - James J. Morris Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Morris is a historian, researcher, and consultant who has dedicated his career to supporting and chronicling the work of the United States military. Most recently, he served as the Deputy Command Historian for the United States Department of the Army, where he spent three years specializing in the Korean War. His work included the preservation and selection of primary sources, conducting interviews, and writing and recording annual histories related to the project. Mr. Morris proudly served as an active-duty member of the United States Navy (USN) from 1981 until 2011, retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5, and credits the Navy with helping him develop the skills and find the opportunities that allowed him to succeed. He worked for the USN for another seven years as a program analyst developing cultural awareness and foreign language training products and providing cultural training to USN personnel at sea and ashore.

Throughout his career with the United States Navy, Mr. Morris served in a broad range of capacities and areas. He began his service as a cryptologic technician interpreter (CTI) on flight duty with VPU-2, VPU-1, and VQ-1. He earned the Master Instructor and Master Training Specialist designations as Instructor Supervisor of the CTI A2 (Russian) school at Goodfellow AFB Texas and was recognized by the United States Air Force as both the 316th Training Squadron and 17th Training Group Instructor of the Quarter. After earning the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) designation in the USS COWPENS (CG-63) as the Signals Warfare Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer, and Intelligence Officer, he served as Rating Assignment Officer at BUPERS managing the assignment of 14,000 personnel in seven ratings. He served as the Training Officer and Assistant Officer in Charge (AOIC) at the Navy Detachment at the Defense Language Institute, where the Navy achieved the lowest attrition rate for three years in a row and digitized all the US Army's foreign language courses. After serving as AOIC of NIOD Seoul, Korea, he served at the Navy Advancement Center overseeing the development of advancement exams, study guides, and courses for 84 Navy ratings. He served as the NIOD Bahrain Forward Officer in Charge in Qatar flying over 800 combat flight hours with VQ-1 and VQ-2 in support of the Iraq War. During his last tour in NIOC Hawaii, he served as N5 Future Operations, Director of Command Support of six departments, and Commanding Officer-equivalent in charge of surface and subsurface cryptologic direct support element teams. Mr. Morris has pursued extensive educational opportunities over the course of his professional journey and holds an Associate of Applied Sciences in Military Science from the Community College of the Air Force, a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Excelsior University, a Master of Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and a Master of Science in International Relations from Troy University, and a Master of Arts in Global History from the American Public University System.

In recognition of his superior service and dedication to US Armed Forces, Mr. Morris earned many personal and unit awards. He credits his success to perseverance and hopes to publish two books in the coming years. To remain at the leading edge of developments in his field, Mr. Morris is a member of the Historical Studies Honor Society. He enjoys rowing and swimming and is active in the Knights of Columbus, Fleet Reserve Association, and American Legion.
