Richard Gayton Lauded for Excellence in Marine Surveying

SEAL COVE, ME, May 11, 2023 - Richard Gayton has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A former British master mariner in the Merchant Navy, Mr. Gayton was inspired to embark on a similar path by his father, who was an officer of the Royal Navy. Upon the conclusion of service, he transferred his vast skill set into his work with The Salvage Association, where he worked as a staff nautical surveyor between 1995 and 2001. Over the years, Mr. Gayton expanded upon his industry knowledge in a similar role with BMT and as the vice president of the Surveys & Technical Department for the American P&I Club and more recently as Regional Director, Americas for Braemar Technical Services.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gayton has gained valuable expertise in directorial roles for Braemar and Leeds & Leeds Company, and as the owner of Compass Marine Surveys, Inc. Backed by his considerable breadth of knowledge, he presently serves as the principal surveyor for Compass Marine Surveys, Inc. In this capacity, one of Mr. Gayton's roles is to assess damage in order to evaluate it for the purposes of insurance. Due to his vast breadth of experiences, Mr. Gayton has obtained four patents for an anti-piracy apparatus for ships and published various articles through the American Club.

An expert in his field, Mr. Gayton attended St. Austell Technical College and became a master mariner through Plymouth Maritime College. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with several organizations, including the American and Canadian Adjusters Association, the Marine Lawyer Association, and formerly the Nautical Institute. Though his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in working with Braemar, where he managed more than 20 surveyors, office staff and contractors. The cornerstone of his success lay in his determination to succeed, always pushing forward, and diversifying his career. Within the coming years, Mr. Gayton aims to obtain chartered status and return to working as an expert witness.
