Following this achievement, she attained a Bachelor of Science in the same area of study from Mars Hill University in 2000 and a Master of Science from the College of William & Mary in 2007.

While pursuing her education, Ms. Garrison defied the advice of a college advisor to enter psychology or sociology rather than computer science, because he said "that is the field women usually worked in". She went on to become the only female sitting in a room with 22 male engineers.
