Benjamin Owens-Filice Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Law

ALEXANDRIA, VA, April 21, 2023 - Benjamin Owens-Filice was selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing on years of professional experience in the law and the defense industry, Mr. Owens-Filice presently excels as a judge advocate for the Headquarters, Department of the Army at the Pentagon. As a judge advocate, he advises generals, senior leaders, and investigators on various issues, including criminal law, ethics, compliance, fiscal law, crisis management, and internal investigations. Throughout his career, he has distinguished himself as a leading expert in litigation at both the trial and appellate level, handling hundreds of criminal cases throughout his career. As an Army Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Owens-Filice proved himself to be an outstanding leader, both at home and abroad, and has earned numerous awards, to include the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His assignments include the 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne), North Carolina; 18th Military Police Brigade, Iraq; 1-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Washington; Government Appellate Division, Virginia; and Military District of Washington, District of Columbia.

An expert in his field, Mr. Owens-Filice earned a Juris Doctor from The University of Michigan's Law School, and a Master of Laws from The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School. Mr. Owens-Filice is admitted to practice law by the bars of the State of California, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He also possesses a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Portland, and an Associate of Arts in the Vietnamese Language from the Defense Language Institute.

While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Owens-Filice is honored to have tried several high-profile sexual assault cases during a time of both media and congressional interest on sexual assaults in the military. Mr. Owens-Filice also tried several murder cases at the appellate level, to include one of the so-called "Leavenworth 10" defendants. As as a commissioner for the Army's highest court, he worked on three notable capital cases: United States v. Akbar; Hasan v. Gross; and Gray v. United States. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, one of Mr. Owens-Filice's scholarly works "Where's the Money Lebowski: Charging Credit and Debit Card Larcenies under Article 121, UCMJ," was published in The Army Lawyer. As both a leader and a lawyer, the cornerstone of Mr. Owens-Filice's success lies in his commitment to character and discipline. Looking toward the future, Mr. Owens-Filice intends to retire from the military and continue his legal career in the civilian sector as a private attorney. He also plans to spend more time with his wife, Carla, and his two daughters, Sofia and Emily.
