Marquis Who's Who Recognizes Thomas A. Metzler for Expertise in Violin Making

GLENDALE, CA, February 02, 2023 - Thomas A. Metzler has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Thomas Metzler runs the Metzler Violin Shop, a full-service violin shop in Southern California, which sells high-quality bowed string instruments from Italy, Germany, France, England, China, and the U.S. including antique instruments from as early as the 17th century. The shop offers repair and restoration services and consignment sales of instruments and bows. Additional services include rentals and appraisals and an extensive string sheet music department. Mr. Metzler works alongside his small team of dedicated employees, including Teru Yoshioka, a very talented restoration specialist who has more than 30 years of experience in repair and restoration at the Metzler shop.

The Metzler Violin Shop maintains a robust website of online sales of instruments, accessories, and sheet music. An important feature of the website is the collection of video performances displaying the tonal attributes of several hundred selected instruments.

Mr. Metzler began violin lessons at the age of eight in Ames, Iowa. He majored in violin performance at the University of Iowa but left school to pursue the dream of becoming a violin maker. In the summer of 1969, he worked as an instrument technician at Scherl and Roth, a violin-importing business in Cleveland, Ohio. There he worked alongside several German-trained luthiers who inspired him to pursue his education at the Bavarian State Trade School for Violin Making in Mittenwald, Germany. In 1972 he applied to the school and was rejected. He traveled to Germany anyway to learn the language and to look for a job in the music field. A last-minute opening at the school allowed him to begin the rigorous curriculum of violin making immediately. During his three- and one-half years in Mittenwald he also worked part-time as an instrument repairman at the musical instrument wholesaler GEWA from 1974 to 1975. He acquired a journeyman's degree in violin making in 1976.

Upon his return home to the U.S., Mr. Metzler completed a three-year apprenticeship in instrument repair at Hans Weisshaar Inc. in Hollywood, California. His workmanship earned him a certificate of merit from the Violin Society of America at a violin making competition in La Jolla, California in 1978.

In 1979 Thomas Metzler and David Rivinus established the Metzler & Rivinus Violin Shop in Glendale, California. Rivinus left the business five years later to pursue other professional interests.

The Metzler Violin Shop is a family business. Mr. Metzler's wife Barbara Don, a professional violinist, established the sheet music department and played an important role in the company's success. Their daughter, Julia Metzler has recently joined the firm. A skilled violinist, Julia also has a singing career in the Los Angeles Master Chorale and in the recording industry. Their other daughter, Leah Metzler, is a full-time professional cellist, teacher, and studio musician.

With a young, enthusiastic team of repair and sales associates, Thomas Metzler continues to expand the shop and its influence into the future.
