Michael "Mickey" Ganitch Recognized for U.S. Navy Career

SAN LEANDRO, CA, February 02, 2023 - Michael "Mickey" Ganitch has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Ganitch enjoyed a fulfilling military career that spanned more than two decades and a loving 58-year marriage before passing away in May 2022 at the age of 102. During his tenure in the U.S. Navy, he was involved in the now-historic Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7, 1941. In 1946, Mr. Ganitch and the USS Pennsylvania participated in the atom bomb testings at Bikini Atoll. In his retirement, Mr. Ganitch was a respected authority on the attack, speaking to people of all ages on the topic.

Born in 1919, Mr. Ganitch graduated from high school before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in August 1940 to avoid being drafted into the army the following spring. He served in the navy until 1963, attaining the rank of senior chief quartermaster, a role that oversees navigation to keep missions safely on course. After surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor, a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, he made it one of his life missions to inform others about the attacks and keep the memory alive. As a result, Mr. Ganitch was the subject of proclamations from many levels of government, including city, county, state legislature, U.S. Congress and even the U.S. president, as well as international proclamations from Australia, France, England and Russia. In the course of his activities in this realm, he had the opportunity to meet President Donald Trump, Prince Harry, the senior prince of Denmark, and many other notables, courtesy of the Greatest Generation Foundation.

Deeply devoted to veterans' issues, Mr. Ganitch was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9601, Fleet Reserve Association and American Legion, and he worked five days per week at the local office of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 7. He served as state treasurer of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was a member of the Orinda Masonic Lodge No. 122. Above all, he enjoyed speaking to students, fraternal groups and many others about the importance of remembrance and keeping the United States alert. Mr. Ganitch is survived by his spouse, Barbara, his four daughters, Janet Nisbee of Colfax, CA, Karen Meek of New Waterford, OH, Joyce Lognion-Strain of Meadow Vista, CA, and Bonnie Church of San Leandro, CA, 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
