Professional Interactive Webinar Series: Implementing the Future of Transportation

WASHINGTON & SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sept. 17, 2020 - This webinar will focus on the development of America's high speed rail program from both a historical perspective and forward-looking view. The speakers were each involved in important key milestones along the nation's path to developing a national high speed rail program.

Speakers include Secretary Norman Mineta, an icon in American public service. He has served both Democratic and Republican presidents, and served in Congress for 20 years representing Silicon Valley and his hometown of San Jose, California, where he had been mayor. He was the first cabinet secretary since the Civil War to serve two presidents of opposing parties in consecutive terms. As the first Asian American cabinet secretary, he was President Clinton's Secretary of Commerce and President George W. Bush's Secretary of Transportation.

Also participating is Secretary Ray LaHood, US Transportation Secretary during the Obama Administration who ushered in the age of high-speed rail development with a program that led to the start of the California High Speed Rail project (currently under construction). Ray will share his impressions of advancing the nation to the next level of federal leadership on high speed rail development.

Rod Diridon will also be participating in this important webinar. Rod was the 1993 founding Executive Director of Congress' Mineta Transportation Institute retiring to emeritus status in 2016. He is considered the "father" of modern transit service in Silicon Valley. After earning his BS and MSBA in statistics from San Jose State University, Rod completed two Vietnam combat tours as a naval officer before his public service career. He was elected in 1971 as a Saratoga City Councilmember, and went on to serve over 20 years (six times as chair), on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and the Transit Board.

"We are proud to have such distinguished transportation icons all together for this important discussion about America's future!" – Andy Kunz, President & CEO, US High Speed Rail Association
