SWHELPER to Host Two-Day Virtual Summit on Advocacy, Anti-Racism, and Voting

DOVER, Del. - Sept. 7, 2020 - SWHELPER, a digital publication for social work and helping professionals, is hosting a two-day Anti-Racism Virtual Summit on 16 and 17 September in collaboration with Salisbury University.

On day one, Crystal Hayes (University of Connecticut School of Social Work) and Jennifer Jewell (Salisbury University School of Social Work) will present on "Dismantling White Supremacy in Social Work".

While social work proclaims social justice as a professional value, the history of social work education and practice tells another story. As uprisings continue to spring up across the country and world, more social workers are being activated into action. This session will explore that history in general and provide an overview of how social workers are disrupting systems of oppression.

"We are looking at the times where we can explore the history of white supremacy within the social work. We will examine how social work educators have worked in disrupting these systems. Furthermore, the speakers will cover the day-to-day techniques to push back against the white supremacy," states Jennifer Jewell, Director of Salisbury School of Social Work.

"Through our Anti-racism Virtual Summit, we aim to help students to learn about the various approaches to influence change. Salisbury University and the University of Connecticut Schools of Social Work have been pivotal in motivating students to be civically engaged and. Our goal is to help them amplify their voices for greater impact," Deona Hooper, MSW Founder and Editor-in-chief of SWHELPER.

Day two of the Summit, Alberto Cifuentes Jr. (University of Connecticut School of Social Work) will be presenting on "Mobilizing the Vote, Voter Registration and Engagement". For a society to grow, students and the youth, in general, should start realizing the value of their voting power.

"Voting is a basic human right as well as a clinical and structural intervention for helping empower marginalized communities, especially Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and lower-income people," says Alberto Cifuentes Jr.

We have some powerful speakers over the course of the two-day Summit, and we are offering up to 16 field placement and CEU hours for social work students and professionals. However, this event is also open to the public, and media credentials are also available.
