“We are excited that we could get the Women’s Curtain Brothers T20 Smash started even though scheduling has been difficult with all the COVID related issues in Port Moresby. We’ve taken every precaution, now it’s time for the women to show us what they can do in what should be two fantastic games here at Amini Park,” said Greg Campbell, Cricket CPNG CEO.

In the morning match, the ODG Mariners came away with a 55-run win over the Hastings Deering Black Bass under clear blue skies at Amni Park.

Batting first, the Mariners scored a competitive 8-119 off their 20 overs. Despite losing a wicket early, Sibona Jimmy 23 off 27 balls and Kila Frank 31 off 41 balls put on a 37-run partnership. At 2-50, the Mariners, lost two wickets in two balls, but managed to put on a further 33 runs. Lucy Ben was the pick of Hastings Deering Deering Black Bass bowlers taking 2-17 off her 4 overs.

Needing 120 to win, the Black Bass were 2-2 after the first two overs. Even though they stopped wickets from falling, The Black Bass could not keep scoring. The ODG Mariners had them at 4-30 after 7 overs then 8-51 after 14 overs. The Black Bass tried to bat through the overs but were bowled out for the 65 in 16.5 overs. The pick of the Mariners bowlers; Uve Noxa 2-5 (2) and Sibona Jimmy 2-11 (4).

In the afternoon fixture, the Hino Cassowaries beat the TrakPro MudMen by 35 runs.

The Cassowaries won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 4 -124 off their 20 overs. Kaia Arua (56 not out off 55 balls) and Noani Vare (36 runs off 38 balls) put on a 73-run partnership. Boio Diho chipped in with 20 runs off 19 balls. The pick of the TrakPro MudMen bowlers, Initia Vagi took two wickets in two balls to have figures of 2 -11 off 3 overs including 1 maiden.

The MudMen started their run chase well, and needed 77 runs off 9 overs with 7 wickets remaining. Brenda Tau and Isabel Tau batted well to score 22 runs each, but the Hino Cassowaries took regular wickets through Isabel Toua 3-18 and Kaia Arua 3-7.

“It was great to the see some good performances from our PNG Lewas and upcoming players in the first two games Curtain Bros T20 Smash. We saw some really good hitting, especially in Kaia Arua’s 56 not out and some good batting partnerships. It’s also good sign that both teams were taking wickets, but we need to work on our discipline – they bowled a few too many extras today. We can put that down to the lack of competitive cricket for a long while, and the inability to train consistently because of this pandemic and government lockdowns. I’m looking forward to seeing what the other fixtures have to offer,” said National Head Coach Joe Dawes.

The Curtin Brothers Women’s T20 Smash will run from Monday 17th of August - Sunday the 30th of August 2020. The competition involves 4 teams playing over six rounds with two games per day in the round robin format.

The Women’s Curtain Bros T20 Smash will intertwine with the Isuzu National Cup over the next two weeks at Amini park before the Mens Curtin Brothers T20 Smash is introduced.
