Author Cyana Riley Releases Children's Book Highlighting and Celebrating Race And Diversity

GAMBRILLS, Md. - June 10, 2020 - Not So Different is a children's book encouraging children to embrace their differences and celebrate diversity. Inspired by her interracial marriage and biracial children, breakout children's book author, Cyana Riley, hopes to create a world where children are able to talk about and learn from each other's differences. Illustrated by Anastasia Kanavaliuk, Not So Different provides clear imagery of the many ways people are different, while also recognizing the ways people are the same. The book launches with the anniversary of Loving vs. Virginia, 53 short years ago when interracial marriages became legal in the United States of America. "Loving Day," is a holiday known for celebrating multiracial families.

"I see the world we live in today and I knew one day my son and daughter would have questions. I want them to be comfortable in their skin, and I want them to celebrate all aspects of who they are. As an educator, reading is one of my favorite ways to bond with my kids. There weren't enough books out there where I felt my kids could see themselves and relate to the characters. I know there are other families who feel the same. So, I wrote this with a lot of love knowing the impact this type of message can have on young children and potentially their parents," says Cyana.

Not So Different comes just in time to help parents discuss race and diversity given the current climate of the world. Cyana wishes to use her passion for telling stories and real-life experiences to make the world a better place not only for others but for her children as well. Cyana has also partnered with Make-A-Wish Foundation to donate $1 for every book sold. Not So Different will be available for purchase through the website at www.notsodifferentbook.com as well as Amazon.

About The Author

Cyana Riley was born and raised in Washington DC. She graduated from George Washington University and spent the first six years of her career as a preschool teacher. It was during that time when she fell in love with writing children's stories and also when she realized the underrepresentation of black and brown children of color in existing stories. Inspired by her interracial marriage and biracial children, Cyana hopes to create a space where children are able to talk about and learn from their differences. Cyana is now a stay at home mom and lives in Maryland with her husband, two children, and Bella the Golden-Doodle. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, spending time at the beach, and taking pictures of her family.
