Water Vapor Barrier Performance of Film Material Made from Tomato Skin

March 06, 2020 - In recent years, many researches of degradable environment-friendly materials have been carried out, and the promotion and application of related materials have also achieved preliminary results, among which the green environment friendly materials made from plants are the focus of research and application. For example, the fruit plant "tomato" is very common, and a large number of tomato skin discarded in the production of tomato sauce is of great value. Italian researchers have proved that tomato skin can be used to make degradable plastic bags. In this paper, the water vapor barrier (permeability) performance of film material made from tomato skin is tested.

In this paper, the tomato skin made film material after a certain treatment was used as the test sample to test its water vapor permeability.

Tomato skin has relatively high water vapor permeability, this test uses the principle of cup method to test the barrier performance of the samples. The test conforms to ASTM E96 Standard Test Methods for Water Vapor Transmission of Materials.

In this paper, W3 / 031 Water Vapor Transmission Rate Tester is used as the test instrument, which is independently developed and produced by Jinan Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd.

The cup method, also known as the gravimetric method, is to obtain the water vapor transmission rate of the tested material by testing the mass change of the test cup. According to the increase or decrease of the mass of the test cup, this principle and method can be divided into two methods: the desiccant method and water method. The principle for both test methods is to separate the internal environment of the test cup from the external environment by the clamped sample. By controlling the difference of the internal and external humidity of the test cup, the penetration of water vapor can be realized. In the desiccant method, a certain amount of desiccant is placed in the test cup to form a low humidity condition The external environment of the cup is of high humidity, and the water method is to add a certain amount of distilled water into the test cup to form a high humidity condition, and the external part of the test cup is controlled as a low humidity environment. The water vapor permeates from the high humidity side to the low humidity side of the sample, resulting in the increase or decrease of the mass of the test cup. When the permeation balance is reached, the water vapor transmission rate of the sample is calculated by measuring the change of the mass of the test cup with the permeation time.

The arithmetic mean value of the test results of three specimens is taken as the water vapor transmission rate of the samples. The water vapor transmission rate of the tomato skin film samples tested this time is 72.317 g/(m2•24h).

Water vapor transmission rate is an important index to characterize the water vapor barrier performance of materials and an important reference to evaluate the application performance of materials. It is of great significance to evaluate the water vapor transmission rate of tomato skin made film materials for improving the performance of plant-based environment friendly materials. According to the test results, the water vapor transmission rate of tomato skin film material is on the high side. In order to improve its moisture-proof performance, it is necessary to modify it. The W3 / 031 water vapor transmission rate tester used in this research is easy to operate, and test results can accurately reflect the water vapor permeability of tomato skin film materials.
