None of the government healthcare or health insurance plans covers Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS) as it is classified as an elective cosmetic procedure. However, there are certain well-known insurers such as United Healthcare, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Tufts Health Plan, and Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare that have started providing coverage for FFS from selected surgeons only.
Many large technology companies including Apple, Amazon, Dell, AT&T, T-Mobile, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, Starbucks, and Boeing have started partnering with health insurance providers from Massachusetts to provide FFS coverage for their employees. Nevertheless, since the terms of these insurance plans are constantly changing, there is no guarantee for FFS insurance coverage or approval of FFS claims.
Most private health insurance providers use different insurance CPT codes for covering Facial Feminization Surgery. Scalp advancement comes under CPT code 14041. Hair Transplants are covered under the CPT code 15776 provided the number of punch grafts is more than 15. 15876 is the code for Suction-Assisted Lipectomy for head and neck. The CPT code for covering tissue grafts is 20926.
Genioplasty and Osteotomies including Sliding Osteotomies come under 21122. 21139 is the CPT code for procedures related to contouring and Setback, reduction of forehead, and anterior frontal sinus wall. Mandibular Rami, Sagittal Split (without internal rigid fixation), and reconstruction procedures come under the CPT code 21195. 21209 is the CPT code for Osteoplasty and reduction of facial bones.
Prosthetic material modifiers - 50 bilateral procedure and malar augmentation procedures are covered under the CPT code 21270. Any stereotactic computer-assisted procedures, related to cranial or extradural come under 61782. Brow Ptosis through Supraciliary / Coronal / Mid-Forehead approach as well as brow repair is covered under the CPT code 67900.
Before going through a Facial Feminization Surgery, it is recommended for the insured to look into the terms and conditions of their health insurance plan and find out which FFS facilities and surgeons are covered under their plan. Information needs to be gathered about the experience and expertise of such surgeons in administering Facial Feminization Surgeries and the success rates they have achieved. Going through a few reviews and talking to a few references can help in getting such details.
Consultation sessions with a few of these surgeons can be helpful in gaining more knowledge about the surgery and clarifying queries if any. These consultation sessions may not be covered under the health insurance plan. Nevertheless, they give a fair idea about the quality of treatments provided by these surgeons.
