High Upfront Cost poses a major challenge in District Cooling Adoption

The inaugural MarketsandMarkets Middle East District Cooling Stakeholders Conclave concluded on 4-5 December 2019 at Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Waterfront. The two-day conference saw the attendance of Government officials, executives alongside industry experts, consultants, contractors and solution providers.

The conference was supported by Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Etihad Energy Services, and Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence.


The panel discussion gave the insights on, how was DC adoption in last 2-3 years in the region? What are the biggest challenges faced by the organizations in the region? and how Government support can ease the situation?

The esteemed speakers on the panel were - Faisal Rashid, Director, Demand Side Management of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Khadija Bin Braik, Director of Water Pricing and Tariffs of Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, Francois-Xavier Boul, Chief Development Officer of Tabreed and Raed Al Ahmed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Emirates District Cooling (Emicool) LLC, moderated by Rajat Kumar, Chief Knowledge Officer of MarketsandMarkets Research Pvt. Ltd. The Panel along with participation from audience highlighted information and learning on the future prospects and strategies.

The conference had innovative action plans to counter water shortage in Middle East. Mohammed AbdulAziz Najem, the Drainage & Irrigation Expert from Dubai Municipality introduced how TSE can be used as alternative to fresh water to DC plants. Ahmed Ghani, the Chairman of Allied Consultants Ltd. presented how sea water can be additional source of water for cooling.

The other distinguished speakers presented case studies from various countries were Abdulsalam Al Mobayed, CEO of Saudi Tabreed Operation & Maintenance, Saudi Arabia; Tarek Zorba, General Manager of The Egyptian Company for Energy & Cooling Projects (Gascool) from Egypt; Fares Ahmed, General Manager, Emaar District Cooling, and Sarfraz Dairkee, the Board Secretary of EmiratesGBC.

Eyad Ismail, the Director of Engineering from Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone detailed the challenges faced from consumer’s point in fireside chat. Various topics on sustainability, green building, SEZ guidelines, were discussed from respective speakers in the conference. Omnia Halawani the Managing Partner of Griffin Consultants; Deepthy KB, Regional Director of Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI); Kevin Miller, Digital Practice Leader from Aurecon were other renowned speakers at the conclave.
