CaseyGerry Managing Partner Receives Top ABOTA Honors

December 04, 2019 - CaseyGerry managing partner David S. Casey Jr. will be awarded the 2019 Hughes McClenahan award for civility in the practice of law by the San Diego Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) at the organization’s annual holiday gala, Sat. Dec.14 at the La Jolla Country Club.

An invitation-only national legal association, ABOTA is committed to the preservation and promotion of the civil jury trial and comprised of the country's leading judges and trial lawyers.

The prestigious Hughes McClenahan award is ABOTA’s highest honor for San Diego legal practitioners/lawyers. It was named after Peter Hughes, a leader in the San Diego legal community for decades, and George McClenahan, a founding partner of Casey McClenahan – a predecessor to CaseyGerry.

According to CaseyGerry partner Frederick Schenk, who currently serves on ABOTA’s executive board, CaseyGerry has a longstanding tradition of ABOTA involvement, with five of its partners included in their membership. “We are proud of our enduring affiliation with ABOTA and are especially honored that the ABOTA selection committee unanimously chose our managing partner for this important accolade.”

Casey Jr. is known for taking on high profile, complex cases. Most recently he represented the family of deceased NFL hero Junior Seau, achieving a confidential settlement while raising consumer awareness about football head injuries and concussion safety. In addition, he represented the family of baseball legend Tony Gwynn – the Padres player who died of salivary gland cancer following a lifetime addiction to smokeless tobacco – in a case against U.S. Tobacco which also settled for a confidential amount.

Earning a reputation nationwide, he served on the Plaintiffs Steering Committee for the Fiat Chrysler Jeep Dodge diesel emissions fraud litigation, helping to achieve a $307 million settlement. And as liaison counsel, he helped achieve a $390 million settlement with Wells Fargo in 2019 over insurance marketing. Serving on the Plaintiff Steering Committee for the case, he played a role in the Volkswagen Group of America’s recent settlement of $96.5 million for inflated claims of fuel economy on some of their vehicles.

A past president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (now the American Association for Justice), Casey Jr. has received more than 90 awards throughout his career, including a perpetual award in his honor, the “David S. Casey, Jr. Consumer Advocate Award,” from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego. He has been recognized on multiple occasions by the Daily Journal as one of California’s “Top 100 Attorneys” and earned the “Pursuit of Justice” award from the American Bar Association. Additionally, he received the 2018 Witkin Award for Excellence in the Practice of Law, was honored with a 2018 Clay award for his work on the national VW Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee and recently received the 2019 USD School of Law Distinguished Alumni Award.
