SATO creates light art installations in neighbourhoods around Helsinki Metropolitan Area

SATO Corporation, Press release 21st November 2019 at 10:00

This year’s SATO and Lux Helsinki light challenge encourages urban residents to get together with their neighbours during the darkest period of the year, too. SATO is brightening things up for residents of SATO buildings with brilliant light art installations and meetups over hot seasonal glögi drinks around the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

SATO is taking up the Light Challenge #valohaaste for the third time now and creating light art installations at six SATO buildings in November-December to brighten up the neighbourhood and at the same time invites residents for a hot seasonal glögi drink. In addition, in December residents will be able to enjoy spruce trees decorated with lights outside around twenty SATO buildings in cities including Kerava, Jyväskylä, Turku and Tampere.

- In the summer we organised Backyard Picnics at our buildings, with hundreds of SATO residents taking part. We want to lower the threshold for spending time with your neighbours during the darkest and coldest time of the year, too. That’s why we’re now inviting neighbours to meet each other and enjoy the lights adorning the building grounds, says SATO Community Manager Piia Matilainen.

The light art installations will be displayed at SATO buildings until the Lux Helsinki light festival in January. Light art installations at SATO buildings:

Kutomotie 14 A, Tali, Helsinki, from 15 November
Matruusinkatu 2, Katajanokka, Helsinki, from Monday 25 November
Virtakuja 2, Myyrmäki, Vantaa, mural lighting from Tuesday 26 November
Raikukuja 4B (StudioHome), Martinlaakso, Vantaa, from Tue 3 December
Tilkankatu 6, Pikku Huopalahti, Helsinki, from Wednesday 4 December
Kauniinilmankuja 3, Aurinkolahti, Helsinki, from Wednesday 4 December
- We want to expand the festival of light from city centres to more and more residential areas as the residential environment really does make a difference in our lives. At the same time we’re encouraging everyone to create their own little light art installations in their home windows together with their family or neighbours, Matilainen says.

In mid-January, SATO will award gift vouchers to three images shared on social media using the hashtag #valohaaste. Participating installations do not have to be big or complicated for a chance to win; instead, the most interesting and memorable images will be selected.
