Victor C. Yee Discusses Undergraduate Process

Victor C. Yee, undergraduate advisor at the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, says that undergraduates are often confused about the college advising process and, therefore, do not get the most out of it. "It is important that undergraduates understand what their college advisors can and cannot do for them as well as how to prepare for an advisement meeting," notes Yee, a professor and passionate chess enthusiast.

According to Yee, as seen at http://ugrad.eller.arizona.edu/about/team/vyee.asp , the main reasons students visit their advisors are because they need help with a course, general academic advice or advice on meeting curriculum requirements. However, advisors can also help students with professional advice about career goals and in locating resources such as support services for personal issues. "What most advisors want their students to know is that they are there for them," notes Yee. "Beyond that, advisors expect to provide accurate and timely data to their students on curriculum and life resources."

However, students also have a responsibility in the advisor/advisee relationship. According to Yee, students should expect to be responsible for their own actions and decisions, learn the college's policies, and be respectful of the advisor's time. "While your advisor is always willing to meet with you and discuss issues, some times may be more appropriate than others. Be sure you know your advisor's office hours and only request a meeting outside of those times if it is truly an emergency."

Victor C. Yee advises students to make the most of their advisor/advisee relationships while in college. "Your advisor is a free and powerful resource who can help you with your career and education goals," he says. "Take advantage of this resource and really listen to what your advisor has to say. If you have questions, be sure to ask them."
