Ms. McDaniel is a registered patent attorney currently serving as Of Counsel at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP (Taft), a role she has held since 2020. Prior to her current role, Ms. McDaniel was a partner at Taft, and prior to that, a partner at Briggs and Morgan (before the Taft/Briggs combination) beginning in 2013. An expert in dispute resolution and litigation related to intellectual property and patents across industries, Ms. McDaniel decided early in her career to specialize in infringement litigation and has spent more than 35 years developing her practice defending businesses and industry innovators against threats to their intellectual property.
An alum of the University of Wisconsin, Ms. McDaniel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and earned her Juris Doctor in 1988 (cum laude). In the process of becoming a registered patent attorney, she earned the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota. Ms. McDaniel began her career in general litigation with Briggs and Morgan. Between 2005 and 2008, she acted as Senior Legal Counsel for Medtronic, managing litigation over medical device patents held by the company. In 2008 she joined Merchant & Gould, PC, as an intellectual property attorney and partner specializing in technology, software, and medical device intellectual property litigation.
In recognition of her career dedication to excellence, Ms. McDaniel was named one of Minnesota Monthly's 2022 Top Lawyers and was honored as a 2012 Minnesota Lawyers Attorney of the Year and Minnesota State Bar Association North Star Lawyer. She is a longtime fixture in the Best Lawyers in America, Minnesota Super Lawyers, and holds a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent peer rating. She is a member of the American Bar Association, and is active in community outreach and humanitarian projects, including service as a Board member for Wounded Warriors in Action, a non-profit focused on healing Purple Heart wounded veterans through recreational therapy. She credits her success to her drive and determination and remains grateful to her many academic and professional mentors for providing pivotal support at key points in her journey. In her personal time, Ms. McDaniel enjoys cooking, gardening, and creative pursuits, and has completed a novel.
