Kmart opts for MACH approach to modern commerce solution from commercetools

Microservices architecture will give iconic Australian retailer the flexibility, agility and scalability to better meet online shopping peaks

commercetools.com, a global leader in next-generation commerce software, has been selected to provide a new commerce solution for Kmart Australia Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s most popular stores.

Kmart Australia chose commercetools so they could build a microservices architecture that is a hybrid of custom services built in-house, and solutions from best of breed partners. Based on the core principles of commercetools’ MACH approach - Microservices, APIs, Cloud-Based, Headless - the new platform will provide a modern, future proof and scalable approach to commerce that will enable the retailer to meet the increased demands of online shopping, using a range of products including the commercetools Merchant Centre, as well as its category management, carts/orders management and customer management solutions.

In order to provide a better experience to their customers and support their digital strategy Kmart wanted to migrate to a platform that would deliver greater flexibility, agility and scalability. The new platform also needed to be easy to work with, particularly when it came to integration with a hybrid microservices architecture.

Explaining the decision to select commercetools software, Vicki Miller, GM of Digital Technology, Kmart Australia said, “commercetools was assessed as the most suitable product, providing the right blend of product vision, architecture, flexibility, scale and experience and the search came down to identifying a product and a partner that would be easy to work with, would support us throughout our journey and collaborate on a long term, successful outcome.”

“This was particularly important as we are also transforming other areas of the business and need the flexibility to implement commercetools in different ways, and to integrate it with accompanying technologies for other business units. As we bring the new platform to market we look forward to providing better personalisation and categorisation capabilities to our commerce experience.”

“As an iconic Australian retailer recognised for its service and convenience, Kmart’s combination of headless and microservices, will provide it with a significant competitive advantage in the local retail market.”

commercetools is gaining momentum in the Australian retail sector, having recently also announced that Cargo Crew, one of Australia’s largest uniform designers and retailers, had chosen commercetools to replace its website and deliver improved, unique and personalised experiences for its diverse global customers.
