Could Carbonated Drinks Really Be Good For You?

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Nov. 17, 2019 - Author Walt Pilcher, whose previous novel shone a spotlight on government stupidity, has set his sights on the energy drinks industry in his latest book, The Accidental Spurrt. "Walt has the ideal background to take on the world's most powerful concerns," says his publisher, Dan Grubb of Fantastic Books Publishing.

Now retired, Pilcher had a long career in commerce working in senior management roles in both the USA and Japan. Add to this a long history of facing the absurd with equanimity and it is clear that Pilcher is well placed to take a pop at global concerns. And he does this to perfection in The Accidental Spurrt where journalist Mark Fairley, downsized out of his day job, is forced by financial expediency to take on a job for energy drink company, Spurr Nutritionals.

No one has planned for the journalist to become involved in anything but the dry history of this family concern fighting to hold its corner in the multi-billion dollar energy drink industry, but events overtake them all; a terrible accident on the bottling line, a hostile overseas takeover bid, shadowy international forces vying for control, and the death of the company president in a mysterious explosion in the research laboratory.

With his impeccable sense of the absurd, Pilcher gives this struggling family firm the game-changer it needs to survive, but does it in such a way that they must do everything in their power to avoid using it. "Again, Walt holds up a mirror to society, showing some uncomfortable truths about the over-powerful multinational corporations that we all support unthinkingly as we follow the adverts and buy their brands," says Dan Grubb. "And the great thing about Walt is that he makes us laugh as he does it. We all need some respite from a world gone mad."

Early reviews agree, with one reviewer noting that the "only time you won't be smiling is when you are laughing out loud."

The Accidental Spurrt launches on National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day 2019 (November 19th).
