How to Optimize Closet Space From the Start

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- How to Optimize Closet Space From the Start

Every home comes with closet space, but ask any homeowner and they'll tell you that what they have is not enough. The primary reason for the inadequacy of available storage space in older homes can be traced back to the time when families simply didn't have as many belongings. As a result, home builders didn’t include walk-in closets and other spacious storage spaces. But, modern families have an overabundance of belongings, and as such, they need extra room for storing it all.

At Southland Custom Homes, our Home Builder in Gainesville believes that optimizing closet space needs to be targeted during the home's design phase. This enables the homeowner to have exactly the amount of closet space they desire. But, even if you live in an older home there are still some things you can do to optimize your closet space.

Separate the Space to Maximize Storage

Ideally, about two-thirds of the closet should feature hanging rods for clothing. In taller closets, you can optimize space by positioning the rods one above the other so you have twice the storage capacity. The remaining third can contain a floor-to-ceiling storage system of shelves and cubbies for holding smaller items like shoes, socks, belts, purses, and other such things often found on the floor of a cluttered closet.

Turn a Coat Closet Into a Utility Closet

Many closets don't work well because they don't have an identity. In other words, the closet is filled with a mish-mash of things ranging from coats to brooms to dog food to cleaning supplies and more. Therefore, the best way to organize a closet is to dedicate it for a singular use. For instance, if you have a hall coat closet, take all of the coats out and relocate them to your clothing closets. Install some pegboard on the back wall of the closet and use that to store everything from flashlights and dust pans to maintenance tools and other quick-grab items. Then, place a rolling drawer unit at the base of the pegboard for holding all of your smaller household items. Store all of your cleaning supplies in a wicker basket and place it on top of the rolling drawer and stick your brooms and mops along the side of the drawers where they won't fall out every time you open the closet door. Now, you'll have a space for everything and everything will be in its place when you need to find it.

Design Off-the-Floor

A closet's floor can quickly become flooded with all manner of things and this makes it not only difficult to gain access to your clothing, but it also makes a chore to clean. One of the best ways to keep your closet easy to use is to design it so the majority of the storage is off the floor. The only things that should be touching the floor are things that are easily removed, like luggage. This way, when you need to vacuum the closet, all you have to do is pull out the luggage and vacuum and you're done.

While these tips can certainly help optimize an existing closet, make no mistake; the best way to ensure that you have enough closet space is to incorporate it into your new home's design at the start so your builders can give you exactly the amount of space you want and need.
