Bacteria in Water Facts
Bacteria are living micro organisms that can cause illness if ingested. Most municipal water systems use some form of disinfectant (chlorine or chloramines) to kill bacteria if present. Wells are susceptible to contamination by animals living near the opening and periodic testing is required. If bacteria is present, chlorination is one method to kill the bacteria and ultraviolet radiation is a second method. Sealing a well opening may also be required to prevent animal contamination.
