How To Slash your Home Power Bill

With the rising cost of gas and electricity rates, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of how you consume your power. When you are wasteful, you not only squander priceless natural resources and energy, but you also waste money.

Here are some things you can do right now so you can slash your home power bill. If you are vigilant about it, you can see the savings when you get your next bill.

Teach everyone in the home the importance of saving energy. Everyone in the family needs to be mindful of saving on power and energy. Young children are easy to train as long as you lead by example.
Turn off the lights. When no one is in the room, make it a point to turn off the light. This is also true for other appliances not in use, such as the TV, video games, computer and radio.
Switch to low watt bulbs. Change to low watt fluorescent bulbs and see your energy savings cut down dramatically. Low watt bulbs provide more illumination than a regular light bulb but only use a fraction of the energy.
Use timers or motion sensor lights. For your outdoor lighting, install timers so the lights aren’t left on 24 hours. Light or motion sensor lights are more energy efficient than leaving your porch light on all night long.
Keep your home well insulated. Cut back on your heating and cooling bill by checking the insulation of your home. As much as twenty percent of your heating can be lost due to improper insulation of windows, doors and vents. With a simple caulking agent, you can seal these air leaks and seal up your home.

Have your heating and cooling system cleaned. Have the filter of your heating and cooling system cleaned regularly to keep it efficient. Don’t place items on the condenser and keep the area around it clear and free of debris. If you want to use an air conditioner, consider installing a window type unit if you only need to cool a specific room.
Keep the thermostat steady. If you want to use your air conditioner in the summer, set the thermostat at about 77 degrees or higher. Every degree you lower will raise your energy bill. During the winter, keep your thermostat at 68 degrees or lower. If you still feel cold, light a fire or put on a sweater.
Switch to energy efficient electrical appliances. Appliances older than 15 years need to be changed. Buy appliances with the energy star label to assure you it is energy efficient. Newer models consume less electricity and are more efficient so make the switch.
Don’t use the clothes dryer. Hang your clothes out to dry instead of using the clothes dryer. You’ll see a tremendous amount of savings when you do so.
Use the washing machine and dishwasher on full load only. Wait till you have a full load of laundry or dirty dishes. Your machine will use the same amount of energy whether it is running at full capacity or you only have one dish or garment in the machine.
Unplug appliances not in use. Even if your appliances aren’t being used, it still consumes a minimal amount of energy as long as it is plugged in the socket. Unplug the TV, computer, cell phone chargers and all other appliances that you aren’t currently using.

It’s not that difficult to cut back on your power consumption so you can save money down the line. It’s simply a more mindful way of living. Make these changes today so you can see the savings on your bill tomorrow!
