Ottawa's Ornaments Celebrate A Decade Of Gritty Rock & Release New EP 'Compassion Fatigue

OTTAWA - Aug. 11, 2019 - RIYL: Parquet Courts, The Oh Sees, Ought, Deerhunter

Genres: Alt Rock, Power Pop, Garage

Just in time for their tenth anniversary, Ottawa garage rockers Ornaments celebrate the release of Compassion Fatigue on June 14, a five-song EP featuring the band's signature chainsaw power pop at its leanest, tightest, and most focused. Despite accolades for its energetic live shows, multiple Ottawa Bluesfest and JUNOFest appearances, and opening slots for PUP, The Dirty Nil, Single Mothers, and The Pack A.D., the record marks Ornaments' first proper release since 2011—and it very nearly didn't happen.

In March 2017, a week away from a prime JUNOFest showcase, the group found itself suddenly down a bass player. Enter long-time friend and GREATHUNTER frontman Andrew Grosvenor, who learned a dozen songs in a matter of days, ensuing in one of the band's most explosive sets to-date. What began as a last second one-off resulted in a renaissance for the group.

Energized and motivated by their new bassist, the trio—rounded out by singer/guitarist David Pierce and drummer Kevin Kozachanko—decided to book some more shows to see if the chemistry would stick and soon found itself writing some of the most urgent, hook-laden songs of its career. Recorded by Mike Bond at Wolf Lake Studios, Compassion Fatigue's five tracks are loud, clear, and direct, taking aim at toxic masculinity ("Like Men"), complacency ("Pull the Alarm"), and the rise of populism ("Wake Up") within its 17-minute run time. As Pierce sings on Wake Up, "I'm on fire—can anyone hear me?" Time will tell.
