Reliance Defence to build Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park in Mihan

Nagpur: Nagpur is all set for a greenfield aerospace equipment manufacturing park to be built by Reliance Group in its Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN) SEZ at an estimated investment of Rs 6,500 crore. The park will have assembly lines and manufacturing infrastructure for fixed wing aircraft and aersotrcuctures for commercial transport aircraft and helicopters—for both defence and commercial sectors-- and will be built by Reliance Defence Ltd.—the newly formed subsidiary of the Anil Ambani-led group.

To be called the Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park (DAAP), it will be equipped with ancillary component manufacturing units and after-sales support capabilities. The Maharashtra govt. has allotted 289 acres of land in the SEZ to Reliance Group within ten weeks of the company making a presentation to the State government.

Speaking in Nagpur at the land allocation ceremony, Anil Ambani said, “The project at Mihan will be the largest greenfield project not only in India but in South-East Asia. We are deeply committed to the defence sector.”

Sources reveal that Mihan was chosen after its world-class facilities scored over potential sites across various states.

DAAP will be modelled on the lines of a smart city into a one-stop hub for aerospace requirements globally. It will be India’s first integrated facility with aerospace structure, engine design and manufacture, fabrication and platform integration capabilities.

Lately, Reliance Group has become increasingly focussed on the defence sector through various strategic acquisitions and partnerships, including one with Augur for aerostat manufacturing in India. It came close on the heels of a controlling stake in Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering Company for about Rs. 819 crore.

It is reported that the group has already entered a deal with Russia to manufacture 200 Kamov 226T helicopters in India. It is the third such deal of its kind between Reliance Group and Russia, after Pipavav got the go-ahead on Grigorivich frigates manufacturing for the Russian navy.
