An Interview with Adam Searan: Part 1

For those of you who don't know Adam Searan yet, Adam is a country music singer songwriter. He grew up in Nashville and has been playing all over the region. He was one of the first songwriting stallions to reside in the Demolition Publishing stable. Searan cowrote "LAST," with Jon D'Agostino and won grand prize in the 2014 Country song category,in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Adam recently released the song as a radio single and the song hit the Music Row Charts at #180. I got a chance to ask Adam a few questions about him and his music. Here is the first half of a two part interview.

1. When and why did you start playing? I was 11 years old. At the time I loved to sing, but never really had the motivation to learn an instrument. Really, it wasn't until around 1995 when I heard "Wonderwall" on the radio that I knew I just had to start playing guitar. So, I asked my Dad if I could use his J-45 that hadn't seen the light of day for years at the time, and he said "Go for it". Thus my journey into becoming an Artist began.

2. Is your family musical? Yes on both my Mom's side and my Dad's. They have done some pretty legendary things for Country music in their day. Although my Dad quit earlier in his life, my Uncle Jimmy is still rockin' music row today.

3. Describe your family member's musical interests and abilities. First off my Dad is one of the most legendary guitar players I have ever seen. He's played for the Opry, Johnny Paycheck, and so many others. My Uncle Jimmy Nichols (Ginetti) has played keys for Reba, Faith , Carrie Underwood... Honestly the list is endless.. He's a monster on the keys !

4. Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? I have to say Noel Gallagher is one of my favorite famous musicians ever. I like his style, and when you listen to interviews with him, he cuts through all of the BS and after all these years is still focused on putting out great material. Also, Sturgell Simpson is fascinating to me because he is doing his own thing and making it. I truly respect artists and musicians that can actually play their instruments and sing their parts. The country legends paved the way for us in this industry, that can still perform all of our songs with an acoustic guitar and sell out a stadium. Play it, sing it, mean it is my brand. So naturally I support guys like Keith Urban that can rock it out live and in the studio, and many other modern country artists whose talent is real not just production.

5. Which famous musicians have you learned from? I try to learn from everyone/everything I listen to even if its not my style. I really connect with honest songs. When I was younger I loved Hank Sr. , Oasis, James Taylor, the list is really endless. I have always loved David Gray, Tonic, Keith Urban, and a vast variety of independent artists that you probably have never heard of. I have learned everything from lyrics to guitar riffs, and even a few life lessons. Music is a powerful thing I try to remember that with whatever I am listening to.

6. Who was your first teacher? Other teachers? My first teacher that really spent an extensive amount of time teaching me "Amazing Grace" was my english teacher when I was home schooled. The second real teacher I had was a guy named David Colon, I learned a lot from him by watching him play at church. He had the J-200 from the "Wonderwall" so as a kid, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

7. Describe your first instrument. My first guitar was a Hamer electric that my dad handed down to me, but I learned a lot of my songs on an old limited edition Roland Ibanez guitar.

8. What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town? The funniest thing I remember was my grandpa used to read his bible at the desk outside of my bedroom. I was incredibly out of tune at first hahah until he suggested I tune. After I got the tuning thing I was incredibly out of time. So Grandpa suggested not to stop in between chords !! I knew I was driving him nuts because I would practice 8 hours a day! However his patience really made a huge difference in my skill level. Funny thing is he wasn't musical at all!
