LANDOVER, Md. -- In their first of two matches within a week in March, the Argentinean men’s national soccer team will take on El Salvador. The match, which will be held at Fedex Field on March 28th will give fans in the United States the chance to see one of the best teams in the world and possibly the best player in the sport, Lionel Messi.
Argentina will head into the match with El Salvador as the second best team in the world in the FIFA/Coca Cola World Rankings. Some of the best known Argentina soccer players include: Messi, Andel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Romero, and Javier Mascherano.
This match with El Salvador is the first of five already announced in 2015 for Argentina. This is coming off a year that saw them win 10 matches, lose just 3 games, and earn a draw in 2. Their only losses a year ago came in matches that were against some of the best teams in the world including Germany in the World Cup Finals, arch-rival Brazil, and a close loss to Portugal. Argentina is also scheduled to take on Ecuador from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on March 31, as well as matches with Paraguay, Uruguay, and Jamaica in the 2015 Copa America.
Standing opposite of Argentina on this day will be the El Salvador national team. While not considered a soccer powerhouse, this team is filled with quality players – both experienced and younger talents. They are looking to have a bounce back 2015 schedule after going just 4-7 during 2014. They lost big matches against Spain, Colombia, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast, among others. Their best players include Rafael Burgos, Jaime Alas, Arturo Alvarez, and Alexander Larin.
Fedex Field will be the site of this international friendly. The venue is the home of the Washington Redskins from the National Football League and since its opening in 1997, has hosted numerous soccer matches including the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999, friendly matches featuring club teams Chelsea F.C., Manchester United, F.C. Barcelona, Real Madrid, and D.C. United.
