Mindful photography goes global

Photential have created this 6 week online course to encourage students to use their camera as a tool for meditation and create personal resonant photographs. The Mindful Photographer provides private web pages with tailored resources, emailed assignments and a private group Flickr page where personal feedback on uploaded photos is provided.

The term Mindful Photography describes the experience of being totally present when creating photographs. It embraces the practice of mindfulness - being completely with the present moment - and relates this to the art of creating photographs.

Mindful Photography is all about seeing: seeing everything that is there. Just as mindful meditation sounds easy - What can be difficult about just sitting and watching the breath? Mindful Photography sounds easy - How difficult can it be to see all that is there? The reality is that our busy mind distracts. Whilst the eyes provide visual stimulation, it is the mind that makes sense of the world and the mind is very keen to name and label what it witnesses. This habit of the mind limits what can be seen. The Mindful Photographer has resources, tasks and assignments that encourage students to fully engage with all that can be seen: to see beyond the labels, to connect with their feelings and create photographs that allow their soul to shine through.

Photential's creator Lee Aspland explained that Mindfulness is “paying attention to your experience in the present moment, without judgement or criticism”. Lee has taken this idea and introduced photography techniques and activities that bring students into the present moment and connect them with what they are really seeing.
