DELHI, India -- Utkarsh Kawatra and Nitin Garg, two young graduates from India's premier technological institute IIT Delhi, started BloodConnect, a non-profit organization that aims to solve the blood shortage in India. What started as a small struggle has now become one of the most motivated student initiatives aimed at saving thousands of lives. Asian Entrepreneur Magazine interviewed Utkarsh Kawatra, one of the masterminds behind one of the most popular student initiative in India.
It all started during their college when Nitin went door-to-door seeking blood donation for one of his family members and was elated to see that a few college students voluntarily came forward to donate blood. Nitin got inspired to help others and after handling a few more blood donation requests within the college, BloodConnect was founded to help large masses of India achieve the same.
In his own words Utkarsh states, "It was a helpline initially but after sometime we realized that this was just a temporary solution because we were only focusing on demand rather than ensuring a continuous supply to the blood banks and so we shifted our focus on supply by organizing blood donation camps and created a BloodConnect platform."
BloodConnect is completed youth-led and has now evolved into a team of 150 members reaching out to provide hlep to most backward areas of the Indian society. They have also been recognized by Government (DSACS) for excellence in promotion of Voluntary Blood Donation. They have organized blood donation camps to help blood banks with sufficient blood stock and increased awareness by organizing street plays, info-talks and competitions.
Through their website people can register as a blood donor, get in touch with them to organize a camp and raise blood requests in case of emergency
