KAMUELA, Hawaii -- When Dell Inc.’s founder and CEO Michael Dell and Egon Durban, his financial partner at Silver Lake Management LLC, talked about pursuing a leveraged buyout (LBO) together, they chose none other than the prime neighborhood of Kukio in Hawaii’s Big Island to seal the deal.

An article on Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-29/dell-s-mitzvah-rescued-buyout-as-jpmorgan-s-lee-warned-of-perils.html) mentions the two as homeowners in the area, their properties among the most expensive in the premium neighborhood. That same article quotes Big Island’s noted luxury real estate agent Harold Clarke of LuzuryBigIsland.com who told Bloomberg that Dell’s estate, also known as the Raptor Residence, is valued to be about $50 million.

In threshing out the LBO idea, Dell and Durban also consulted with another Kukioneighbor, founder of leading global investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), while meandering in the grounds of the lovely beach resort.The deal pushed through; keeping Dell at the helm of the company he built after dropping out from the University of Texas at Austin.

As of March 2014, 49 year-old Dell is ranked as #48 in Forbes' list of the richest Americans, with $17.5 billion net worth. He was only 27 when he became the youngest CEO of a company listed in Forbes’ top 500 corporations in 1992. Meanwhile, Durban, 39, is the managing partner and managing director at Silver Lake, the same private equity firm that orchestrated the sale of Skype to Microsoft in 2011.
