Book on how to turn electronic prototypes into actual products

Making a working electronic gadget is relatively easy. One can buy a kit of parts or work though some notes and make a device for charging batteries or raise an alarm when the temperature drops. However, turning this into a commercial product requires many different skills.

Universities and colleges are very good at giving their students a solid grounding in the technology so that graduates can produce prototype designs that work. What they are not taught is how to turn those prototypes into commercial products that sell at a price that generates a profit for their companies.

Author Seggy T Segaran says “During my time on the board of Electronics Yorkshire my fellow directors always used to complain about the standard of electronic graduates coming out of university. There just did not seem to be a proper programme of training on turning their prototypes into commercial products”.

“So I set out to help graduates by putting down on paper some of my experiences over the last 30 years. As well as talk about the successes I include many mistakes that were made and how these could have been avoided.”

The book, which is available on Amazon in print as well as a Kindle version, covers a number of topics that is useful to the budding engineer such as the design of the enclosure, making sure that the product can be manufactured economically and that component tolerances have been taken into account. A good product designer also has to take into account regulatory requirements such as emissions and safety, make sure that the product is documented accurately for production and be confident that it can be easily supported in the field.
