NPCS Launches Complete Book On Ferroalloys

DELHI, India -- Introduction to Ferroalloys

An alloy is nothing, but a solid mixture made by combining various metals. Ferroalloys refers to alloy of iron with the high proportion of other elements namely aluminium, manganese or silicon. They can be made by adding only one element or all of the elements to achieve the desired degree of corrosion resistance, tensile strength, yield strength, heat resistance, lusture, dutibility, malleability, conductivity etc.

Different Types Of Ferroalloys

There are different types of ferroalloys present in the industry. Some of them are listed below

Ferro Chromium
Ferro Niobium
Ferro Manganese
Ferro Silicon
Ferro Molybdenum
Ferro Nickel
Ferro Tungsten
Ferro Titanium
Ferro Vanadium

Types of Ferroalloys

There are two major types of ferroalloys depending on the production process used. They are:-

Bulk Alloys - They are ferro alloys of Chromium, Manganese, Silicon & Nickel which are added in larger proportion to steels and are made by carbo thermal reduction in submerged arc electric furnaces(SAF).
Noble Ferro Alloys - They are ferro alloys of vanadium, molybdenum, Tungsten, Zirconium, Titanium, Boron, Tantalium, Magnesium Silicon which are added to steel in much lesser proportion as comapred to bulk alloys. These are generally made by silico thermic reduction or alumino thermic processes.

Ferroalloys Industry In India

Production of ferroalloys began almost six decades ago in India in 1950s through electric submerged arc furnace route. In the industry's first phase, mostly managanese alloys were produced using 18 furnaces in 1960s. These furnaces were run by few manufacturers namely Tata Iron & steel Co, Ltd (TISCO), Universal Ferro Alloys Ltd (UFA), Ferro Alloys Corporation Ltd(FACOR), Khandelwal Ferro Alloys Co. Ltd, Dandeli Ferro Alloys Ltd, Visveswaraya Iron & steel Co, Ltd (VISL), Jeypur Sugar Co. Ltd (JEYSUCO) etc. Second phase began beteen late 1960s and 1970s through the commencement of moderate size furances by various companies to produce silicon & chromium alloys. These comapnies were namely Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Ltd.(IMFA), FACOR, Dandeli Ferro Alloys Ltd, Nav Bharat Ferro Aloys Ltd. (NAVFAL), Ind. Development Corp.of Orissa Ltd.(IDCOL) etc. This was followed by third phase and fourth phase of expansion in which many small scale producers set up their plants accross India with furnace range from 1MVA to 7.5 MVA

This book offers complete overview of ferro alloys like Ferro Manganese, Ferro Molybdenum, Ferro Niobium, Ferro Boron, Ferro Titanium, Ferro Tungsten, Ferro Silicon, Ferro Nickel, Ferro Chrome etc. It covers various topics like production of ferro managanese, production of ferro niobium, production of ferro boron, production of ferro titanium, production techniques of ferroalloys, pollution control in ferroalloy production etc.

This book is highly recommended for entrepreneurs who want to enter into this line of business, librarians, consultancy firms, professionals etc.
