Open Education Experts to discuss Alternative Pathways in Building MOOCs

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Open Doors Group (ODG) announces that Jacky Hood and Steve Woodis of ODG and Clare Middleton-Detzner of ISKME will provide an overview of alternative pathways for education, three specific MOOC research topic related to peer interaction, and lessons learned from the development of two MOOCs at the Un/Conference at San Jose State University on October 25, 2013.

ISKME's research on alternative learning pathways is delving into how MOOCs and other new learning models are incorporating peer-based learning. As Clare Middleton-Detzner, Research Associate at ISKME explains, "We are developing an analysis framework to map out how student-teacher interactions, peer-to-peer learning and new methods for recognizing achievement and completion are changing the education landscape."

MOOC research covers a broad range of topics in categories including Student Experience, Learning Design, and more. ISKME and ODG will propose research on peer interaction in three areas: assistance, comments, and grading.

Starting in July 2013, ODG began creating two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). One will serve as an alternative pathway for educators to learn about rapid book publishing and the other an alternative pathway for educators to gain skills in scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and implementing the many projects they manage. The projects are supported by a diverse and geographically dispersed group of volunteers from academia, publishing, and industry.

The course The course titles are Rapid Book Publishing for Educators https://www.canvas.net/courses/rapid-book-publishing-for-... and Project Management Skills for All Careers https://www.canvas.net/courses/project-management-skills-....

Mitchell Levy, Executive Director of ODG and instructor of the Publishing course said, ”This is a great opportunity for attendees to hear about the positive and negative lessons learned from creating these MOOCs. Instructors will have the opportunity to work with hundreds of others in an online setting and be exposed to accelerated career-enhancing techniques built on both academic and industry best-practices.”

Christina Mune, a member of the conference organizing committee stated, "SJSU's Un/Conference is excited to hear from the MOOC developers on the opportunities and challenges this new, innovative educational tool presents. We expect our participants to derive practical advice on how they too can engage directly with MOOCs."

The courses are offered at no cost to students. The required textbooks are available at affordable prices.
