Wheely Wet Start for Women’s Cycling Event

Over 600 female cyclists crossed the start line of Scotland’s first Cycletta event this morning, braving Scotland’s Autumnal weather and setting off on a variety of courses ranging from 20km – 63km from the inspirational grounds of Scone Palace in Perthshire.

Led from the front by Sarah Butler, CEO of Scone Palace, the UK’s leading cycling series especially for women which is backed by Olympian Victoria Pendleton CBE, was formally opened by Liz Grant, Provost of Perth & Kinross, who also performed the equally important duty of starting the Scootathlon, an event for the younger family members of the ladies taking part.

Commenting on the event, Liz Grant said:

“There was a real buzz around the grounds of the palace today and it was fantastic to see the first Scottish event get such a great turnout. It was a real honour to mark the start of the event and watch everyone spin off into the Perthshire countryside on two wheels.”

Nick Rusling, CEO at event organisers Human Race, said

“We are absolutely delighted with how well the event went this weekend. Despite the challenging weather conditions, everyone was in good spirits in the grounds of Scone Palace and it was fantastic to see so many ladies crossing the finish line with proud smiles. Feedback has been extremely positive with everyone commenting on the stunning scenery on the route.

“We’d like to extend our thanks to Macmillan Cancer Support, Perth & Kinross Council, and the many sponsors involved in the event who contribute to ensuring it is a fantastic experience for cyclists.

He added:

“We are already in planning for next year’s event and are excited about the future of the Cycletta series in Scotland. Cyletta is now firmly established as the UK’s leading cycling event for women and we expect sign up for 2014 to be very strong indeed.”

Official charity partner of the Cycletta Series, Macmillan Cancer Support, had over 200 cyclists raising funds at Sunday’s event.

Liz Hemming from Macmillan Cancer Support, said:

"We have loved being a part of this amazing event and seeing all the cyclists cross the finish line. We're especially proud of all the cyclists who have completed today's challenge to raise money for us.
