Annual Playland Day For People With Disabilities Expected To Draw Thousands For Free Day Of Fun

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- The 38th annual Playland Day for People with Disabilities will take place at Playland on Friday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nearly 7,000 people have been invited to the event. And this year for the first time Westchester County’s Office for the Disabled and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation are pleased to partner with the Tommie Cares Foundation, which has generously agreed to sponsor the cost of the event.

Playland Day for People with Disabilities is open to all Westchester County residents with a disability and members of their immediate families. Parents, friends, and volunteers are all welcome to join in the day of free rides, entertainment and activities.

“Playland Day gives people with disabilities an opportunity to enjoy all the great things Playland has to offer, and join in the fun with thousands of other families who share their same experiences,” explained County Executive Robert P. Astorino.

New this year, the Tommie Cares Foundation will be organizing adventure water sports activities at Rye Beach, where specially trained lifeguards and athletes will take a limited number of children with special needs kayaking, stand up paddling, outrigger canoeing, and more.

The adventure water sports will begin at 8 a.m. at Rye Beach. Children who wish to take part should register in advance online at tommiecares.org.

“We are thrilled to partner with Westchester County and take part in this fantastic event,” said Tom Kallish, founder of Tommie Cares. “This year we’ll be bringing a whole new dimension to Playland Day, offering more than a hundred special needs children the thrill of lifetime as they buddy up with our dozens of volunteer athletes and lifeguards to participate in real life adventure sports, right there at Rye Beach where their families can watch and enjoy the experience along with them.”

Astorino added, “I want to give a special thanks to Tom Kallish and the whole Tommie Cares team for sponsoring this year’s event, and for making it even more special. We truly hope this is a partnership that will last for many years to come.”

Verizon, also a sponsor, will provide volunteers to help with traffic control, ride assistance, registration and entertainment. Pepsi has donated gifts, prizes and promotional materials.

There is no rain date scheduled.
