Dr. Grace's career is further highlighted by his long tenure as clinical director at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center from 1990 to 2020. He is very proud of this extensive work, knowing how many lives he touched and enhanced. His earlier roles include serving as chief of forensic psychiatry and director of correctional health for Westchester County Medical Center from 1986 to 1988, where he supervised methadone maintenance programs and provided medical and psychiatric care for inmates. While he acknowledges the role that medications play in treatment, he consistently advocates for more person-to-person therapy and contact.
In academia, Dr. Grace has been a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the State University of New York, Buffalo, since 1990. He also served in a similar role at the New York Medical College and contributed as a consulting psychiatrist for chemical dependency services at Erie County Medical Center for over a decade.
Dr. Grace's background as a student includes a research fellowship in biological and psychopharmacology of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1985 to 1986 and a residency in adult psychiatry at the University of California Davis Medical Center for the preceding four years. He earned an MD from Wayne State University in 1981, a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1975 and an associate degree in science from Highland Park Community College.
Dr. Grace's professional affiliations are extensive. He has been a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association since 2018 and served as president of the Western New York Psychiatric Society from 1993 to 1994. He is also affiliated with the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Grace has received numerous accolades, including the Dr. Charles A Weiss Distinguished Service Award from Greater Buffalo Counseling Center Inc. in 2007 and the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 2001, among many others. He has also contributed to numerous articles in professional journals, further solidifying his impact in the field.
Beyond his professional work, Dr. Grace is civically involved with Elim Christian Fellowship. In his personal life, he cherishes spending time with wife, Marion, daughter Jennifer, sister Deborah, and brother James, and extended family. He enjoys movies, music, writing and art as hobbies.
