June 5 2013, the world witnessed of another DOS (Denial of Service) attack made on very famous encrypted file sharing website called “Mega upload”. The site came down for two and a half hours after such huge attack.

Speaking with Mega upload’s chief programmer Bram van der Kolk said, the attack induced a 50% packet loss that was protected by SSL root cluster, individuals who were logged in and the API were remained safe during this attack. He further added that the company would now use tougher SSL root cluster to minimize the risk of future DOS attack.

Megaupload.com is well known for online services regarding to file storage and viewing, a Hongkong based company was established in 2005, having position in top 15 file hosting services. On January 19 2012, the company was shut down against the breach of copyright and Customs and Excise Department of Hong Kong froze an approx. 42 million USD worth assets of a company. The company was re-launched on January 19, 2013 as “Mega” with a domain mega.co.nz after winning the judicial battles. The company received all the assets blocked by the US government.

However, Van der Kolk did not disclose any source name behind this attack. The company will use from now more bandwidth compare to the consumption capacity of New Zealand.

Even Cisco also said in its report called “Visual Networking Index” that measures monthly internet traffic shows that by the end of this year the internet traffic will grow from 66 petabytes to 81 petabytes in New Zealand. Compare to New Zealand traffic data, it is estimated at 17% hike in internet traffic in Australia growing from 343 petabytes to 418 petabytes.

Now the site has started to back up its activities. It shows that Mega will now need more strength for SSL root due to elevated traffic and recent DOS attack. However, a single data certer provider hosts Mega in current days, but Mega also aims to provide more bandwidth on a distributed server set up with multiple hosts all over the world.
